What to Expect from Your First Therapy Session
Booking a first therapy session can feel like a big step. Knowing what actually happens, in the room or on the call, takes some of the uncertainty out of it.
Before you arrive
You do not need to prepare anything. Some people bring notes about what has been on their mind. Others prefer to arrive and see what comes up. Both are fine.
What the first session covers
The first session is mostly about getting to know you. Your therapist will ask what brought you in, what has been happening recently, and what you are hoping for. You set the pace, and you can decline any question. Expect to touch on:
What has been troubling you, and for how long
What support you already have around you
What you would like to be different
What it is not
A first session is not a test, and it does not commit you to anything long term. If it turns out the fit is not right, say so. Finding a therapist you feel comfortable with matters more than staying with the first one you meet.
When you are ready
Our Initial Consultation is a 45-minute conversation to understand your needs and plan the right support, online or in person. If you need urgent help, please see our Crisis Support page.
